About
The beginning of my photography journey came when my dad gave my sister and me an ancient Yashica-A Twin Lens Reflex
camera and sent us out into the cemetery behind our house to entertain ourselves during the summer before 4th grade. We returned with shots of a grave digger, a landscaper, and our grandmother's headstone — in black and white. Collectively, we thought those photos told a pretty good story…for an 8 and 10 year old.
That was followed by a long hiatus where music became my primary creative outlet — if not successfully, at least fulfillingly. As a bassist, studio owner, and now guitarist and songwriter, mood fascinates me more than virtuosity, and I'm drawn to how simple, textural elements layer into a composition. Photography, when I returned to it in the days of early digital SLRs, worked the same way. Thousands of photos later, I (mostly) understand what I look for in a photograph. As with music, mood pulls me in more than majesty — particularly mood created by an isolated subject against softer, receding elements. While not afraid of a photo with a story, I'm more intrigued by one that prompts a viewer to create their own.
Born and bred in New England, its mountains, sea, lakes and marshes may not carry the drama of the world's most photographed places, but they own their own character and beauty. Familiarity pushes me to find a new view, a new moment in known surroundings.
